Marrakech Neighborhoods: Where to Stay and What Each Area Is Really Like

The walled old city is where most visitors want to spend their time. Souks, palaces, gardens, and Jemaa el-Fna square are all within walking distance, and the alleys hold the city's richest concentration of historic riads.

Two things to plan for: access and noise. Riads sit on lanes too narrow for cars, so every arrival involves a short walk or a horse-drawn calèche from the nearest gate — your driver or concierge can arrange this in advance. And the medina is never silent: call to prayer, rooftop music, and street life are part of the charm, and you should choose a riad with good insulation if you sleep early.

Streets are car-accessible, which makes Guéliz easier for families, for arriving with luggage, and for getting around by taxi. It is the sensible base if you prefer a boutique hotel on a proper street over a riad in an alley.

A quieter residential area just west of the medina, home to several large hotels, the Menara gardens, and a good share of the city's nightlife.

It is walkable at night, calm after dark, and an easy ten-minute drive from the old city. We often recommend Hivernage to couples and to event guests who want a peaceful hotel after a busy wedding day.

The palm grove north of the city is where private villas and the largest hotel gardens are found. You will need a car or driver for everything, but you trade convenience for space, privacy, and poolside calm.

This is the natural choice for families and groups staying together in one villa, and for weddings held at the grand venues along the palm grove roads. The Agdal district south of the medina offers a similar villa lifestyle closer to the airport.

As a rule of thumb: the medina for atmosphere and sightseeing, Guéliz for convenience and dining, Hivernage for calm and nightlife access, and the Palmeraie for space and privacy.
