Getting Around Marrakech: Drivers, Taxis, Rental Cars

For most of our guests, a private driver is the simplest option. A professional chauffeur in a comfortable sedan or SUV waits for you, knows the routes and the parking realities of the medina, and handles airport transfers, dinners, and day trips in one booking.

You are quoted per trip or per day depending on the itinerary; contact us for current availability and personalized options. It is the option we recommend for families, couples celebrating, and anyone on a tight schedule.

The small beige petite taxis are inexpensive and fine for short trips within the city — for example from a Guéliz hotel to the medina gate. Always agree the fare before getting in or insist the meter is used; drivers expect negotiation, and a local helper can confirm the going rate.

Petite taxis do not run outside the city. The larger beige grand taxis run shared intercity routes and can be hired for the day, though we generally recommend a private driver for reliability.

Renting a car makes sense mainly if you plan to explore beyond Marrakech for several days — a road loop through the Atlas, Essaouira, and the coast, for example.

Inside the city, parking is limited and the medina is car-free, so a rental is usually more hassle than help. If you do rent, book an automatic transmission in advance, and confirm your hotel or riad has parking. Most boutique riads do not.

For weddings, corporate groups, and larger families, we arrange minibuses and vans with drivers so everyone moves together — airport pickups, venue transfers, and day trips.

This keeps the group on schedule, spares guests the logistics of hailing several taxis, and makes the whole experience feel effortless. Availability and vehicles are confirmed at booking.

Agafay Desert is about 45 minutes from the city, the Atlas villages about an hour, Essaouira two and a half hours, and Ouzoud Waterfalls two and a half hours.

Each of these is best done with a driver who knows the route — mountain roads are winding and some desert tracks need a capable vehicle. We arrange day trips with stops planned around your pace.

Inside the walls, everything is on foot. Wear comfortable shoes — the alleyways are uneven and busy — and keep a note of your riad's name and nearest gate.

Our guides walk with you to the key sights and arrange pickup at the gate you will exit, so you never backtrack through the maze carrying shopping.
